Why Sabana Sur is San Jose's Best-Kept Secret for Travelers

Most visitors to San Jose end up in one of two situations: they stay downtown and find it noisy and overwhelming, or they stay near the airport and feel like they're in a transit corridor rather than a real place. Sabana Sur offers a third option that experienced travelers gravitate toward — a genuine residential neighborhood with mature trees, quiet streets, excellent access to everywhere you'd want to go, and the biggest urban park in the country right at your doorstep.

When we chose the location for KC Hotel, Sabana Sur wasn't the flashy choice. But it was the smart one. Here's why.

La Sabana Metropolitan Park — Your Morning Ritual

La Sabana is San Jose's Central Park, its Hyde Park, its Jardins du Luxembourg. It's 72 hectares of green space that was once the city's international airport (you can still see the old terminal building, now the Costa Rica Art Museum). Every morning, the park fills with joggers, cyclists, yoga practitioners, and dog walkers. By 6 AM, the running paths around the lake are buzzing with Ticos getting their exercise in before work.

KC Hotel is a five-minute walk from the southern entrance. Many of our guests fall into a morning routine: wake up, walk to the park, do a few laps or find a bench for meditation, then come back to Baraka for breakfast. It's the kind of ritual that turns a hotel stay into something that actually feels restorative.

The park also has outdoor exercise stations (free), soccer fields, a basketball court, a public swimming pool, and the National Stadium — a 35,000-seat arena donated by China that hosts major concerts and football matches. If there's a game or concert during your stay, it's a five-minute walk from the hotel. You'll hear the crowd roar from the garden.

The Quiet Residential Character

Sabana Sur is not a tourist neighborhood, and that's exactly the point. The streets are lined with modest houses, small apartment buildings, and the occasional corner store. Kids ride bikes in the afternoon. Neighbors chat over fences. There's a rhythm to daily life here that you simply don't get in the tourist zones.

Walking from KC Hotel to the park, you'll pass a small bakery where fresh bread comes out at 5 AM, a hardware store that's been family-run for decades, and a hair salon where the owner knows everyone by name. It sounds mundane, but these are the textures of a real neighborhood — and they're the difference between feeling like a tourist and feeling like a temporary resident.

Safety is a common question, and it's a fair one for San Jose. Sabana Sur is one of the city's safer neighborhoods. Like anywhere, use common sense after dark — don't flash expensive jewelry, stick to lit streets, and use Uber or a taxi for longer distances at night. But during the day, walking around feels completely natural and relaxed.

Where to Eat and Drink Nearby

You don't have to go far for good food. Within a 10-minute walk of KC Hotel:

Baraka (at KC Hotel) — Mediterranean-Middle Eastern fusion with a garden courtyard. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Start here; you'll keep coming back.

La Criollita — Five minutes south, this is the local's lunch spot. Classic casados, sopa negra, arroz con pollo. Cash-friendly and authentic.

Lubnan — Excellent Lebanese food, ten minutes on foot. Mezze platters, shawarma, and strong Arabic coffee.

Panadería La Trigueña — A neighborhood bakery two blocks away where you can grab a bag of warm empanadas and a coffee for under $3. Perfect for an afternoon snack.

Café del Parque — On the edge of La Sabana, this low-key café is ideal for post-jog coffee or a quiet spot to work on your laptop. They have decent Wi-Fi and don't rush you.

For a wider dining scene, Barrio Escalante is a 12-minute drive east, and the Sabana Norte restaurant row (Park Café, Restaurante Grano de Oro) is just across the park.

The Sunday Feria (Farmers' Market)

Every Sunday morning, a farmers' market sets up within walking distance of the hotel. Local farmers bring down produce from the Central Valley hills — strawberries from Poás, coffee from Tarrazú, cheese from Zarcero, honey from the Orosi Valley.

The prices are about half what you'd pay in a supermarket, and everything is ridiculously fresh. Even if you're not cooking (you're on vacation, after all), it's worth going just for the experience: the colors, the shouting vendors, the free samples of tropical fruits you've never seen before. Grab a bag of fresh mangoes and some homemade coconut candy, and your snacking is sorted for the week.

The market runs from about 6 AM to noon, but the best selection is early. Set an alarm — it's worth it.

Getting Around from Sabana Sur

One of the biggest practical advantages of staying here is access. Sabana Sur sits on the western edge of the city center, which means:

  • Downtown San Jose (museums, National Theater, Central Market): 10–15 minutes by car or Uber ($3–$5)
  • Barrio Escalante (restaurant district): 12 minutes by car
  • SJO Airport (Juan Santamaría): 20–25 minutes via the highway, with no downtown traffic to fight
  • Escazú (upscale malls, international restaurants): 15 minutes
  • Day trip starting points (Poás, La Paz, Orosi): Direct highway access without crossing the city

Uber works seamlessly in San Jose and is the easiest way to get around. Rides within the city rarely cost more than $5. For day trips, we can arrange a private driver at the front desk — often more comfortable and only slightly more expensive than renting a car, especially when you factor in the adventure of Costa Rican driving.

The Pace of Life

There's something about Sabana Sur's energy that helps travelers decompress. Downtown San Jose has a frenetic pace — honking buses, crowded sidewalks, sensory overload. The beach towns have their own hustle of tourism. But Sabana Sur moves at a human speed.

In the evening, as the sun goes down behind the mountains west of the city, you can sit in KC Hotel's garden with a drink from Baraka and watch the sky turn orange and pink. The National Stadium lights up across the park. The temperature drops to a comfortable 20°C. You can hear birds settling in the trees.

It's not exciting in the way a beachfront resort is exciting. It's better — it's comfortable, real, and endlessly pleasant. And when you want excitement, it's fifteen minutes in any direction.

A Note for Digital Nomads

We've noticed more and more guests staying a week or longer to work remotely from KC Hotel. Sabana Sur is ideal for this. The hotel has strong Wi-Fi, Baraka serves excellent working fuel all day, and La Sabana park is right there when you need to clear your head between Zoom calls.

The neighborhood has reliable mobile data coverage (Kolbi and Liberty are the main carriers), a few coworking spaces within Uber distance, and the kind of daily routine infrastructure (pharmacies, ATMs, laundry, supermarkets) that makes an extended stay feel effortless.

If you're thinking about spending a week or more in San Jose — whether for work, as a base for day trips, or just to slow down and live like a local for a while — Sabana Sur is where we'd put you. And we did.
